| This continuous audio loop presents a recording of an orchestra alternately warming up and tuning. The normal protocol for tuning each section of the orchestra is extended and repeated, greatly heightening the feeling of anticipation that these sounds of preparation often generate. The concert never begins, the music does not take form. This repeated deferral raises the question of what music we find ourselves expecting to hear, and which associations with European "classical" music, such as narratives of state, romantic expression, or individualism, are brought to mind by the imagined music’s absence. |
